My Favorite Poems!!
Casey at Bat
written by: Ernest Lawrence Thayer
I like the poem, Casey at Bat, because:
It Rhymes, It is about baseball, and The story is cute. I enjoy the fact that this poem is upbeat and it keeps your interest because you do not know what is going to happen next. Baseball is America's pasttime and it is one of my most favorite things. I love to watch it and sometimes even play it. It is not like some poems- you can understand what it means. I enjoy the fact that is is very descriptive. The ending is not what I expected it would be, which also makes it a great poem. I had heard of this famous baseball poem before, but I had never read it, so I am glad that I took the time to find it and read it because it is one that I enjoy very much.

"Casey at the Bat" is such a "classic!" It is a great story poem, like you I love the way it builds to a climax. Look at how the repetition in those last lines produces excitement and tension. "And now the pitcher holds the ball, And now..., And now..." Then the sudden break from the repetition really puts you on the edge of your seat.
